The dialogue started with a quotation from the NRC Handelsblad bij Wapke. The text is by Hans van der Helm:
`When animals can choose themselves, they had choosen white. But in most labs the colour comes into existence by accident. If that would be red, the mice get stressed. This can influence their actions during standard behavioural tests, thus tinting the results. Up until now colour did not matter for mice keepers. This is actually strange considering a lot of attention is being paid to improve the quality of life for test animals. (…) That other animals have preferences when it comes to colours was already well known. And that the colour of the surroundings affect the emotional state of people and their work results, was also well established. But nothing was known about the colour preferences of mice. That is why over seventy mice were put into red, black, green or white coloured mazes (…) Most mice preferred the white maze. The red maze was the least popular, there the mice quietly remained in one of the dead end alleys of the maze, which is a sign of agitation and stress.`

“Als de dieren zelf mogen kiezen, kiezen ze voor wit. Maar in de meeste laboratoria komt de kleur toevallig tot stand. Als die rood is, krijgen de muizen stress. Dat kan hun acties bij standaard gedragstests beïnvloeden en dus de betekenis daarvan flink ondergraven.
Kleur speelde in de muizenhouderij tot nu toe geen rol. Eigenlijk vreemd als je bedenkt dat er de laatste jaren veel aandacht is voor kwaliteitsverhoging van proefdieren. (...) Van andere dieren was al bekend dat zij voorkeuren hebben voor bepaalde kleuren. En ook bij mensen is gebleken dat de omgevingskleur de emotionele staat en taakverrichting beïnvloedt. Maar van muizen wist men nog niets.
Ruim zeventig muizen kregen daarom in het onderzoek verblijven die rood, zwart, groen of wit geverfd waren. (...) De meeste muizen spraken zich uit voor een wit verblijf. Een rood verblijf is het minst populair. (...) De muizen uit de rode verblijfjes hielden zich voornamelijk stil op in doodlopende armen, wat wijst op hoge onrust en angst.”
